E-005292/2018(ASW)
Answer given by Mr Avramopoulos on behalf of the European Commission
Question reference: E-005292/2018

The Commission fully recognises the risks that law enforcement authorities take in the performance of their duties and has the fullest respect for those who risk their lives daily to protect the citizens.

The provision and maintenance of equipment to law enforcement authorities is a matter for which Member States are responsible and which is not governed by EC law.

It should be recalled that a number of Member States use the possibility offered by the national programmes of the EU ‘Internal Security Fund-Police’ funding mechanism to procure specific equipment for their law enforcement authorities, with the exclusion of standard basic equipment and any coercive equipment which should be funded through national budgets.
