E-005359-18
Question for written answer E-005359-18
to the Commission (Vice-President/High Representative)
Rule 130
Marlene Mizzi (S&D)

 Subject:  VP/HR — Foreign policy
 Answer in writing

China has announced its Belt and Road initiative, aiming to create trade routes across the Asian continent and the Indian Ocean. These routes would go as far as the Balkans, where Chinese companies are investing in infrastructure and founding subsidiaries. While investment in infrastructure is welcome, it creates debt dependency on, and, more generally, close links with China, among (potential) candidate countries to the EU. How does the High Representative plan on dealing with this initiative to stave off undue influence while not losing our trade partner?
