E-005364-18
Question for written answer E-005364-18
to the Commission
Rule 130
Marlene Mizzi (S&D)

 Subject:  Children's rights
 Answer in writing

More than eight million children live in institutions and orphanages around the world, 80% of whom have one living parent. Institutionalisation perpetuates, rather than alleviates, the exploitation of vulnerable children. Faced with the rise in ‘for profit’ orphanages and the growing trend of orphanage voluntourism, European countries need to tackle the institutionalisation of children around the world, and ensure that the child’s best interests are always protected. How does the Commission plan on assisting the Member States on this issue?
