E-005420-18
Question for written answer E-005420-18
to the Commission
Rule 130
Renate Sommer (PPE)

Subject:  Possible environmental impact of bioethanol production in the Amazon in the context of the EU-Mercosur FTA
 Answer in writing

The Commission has shown its willingness to ensure that there is no adverse environmental impact from the use of crop-based biofuels. However, in the context of the EU-Mercosur free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations, for the purposes of which the Commission has also offered a 600 000 tonne annual quota for ethanol at a much reduced tariff, a motion was put to the Brazilian Senate earlier this year to lift the moratorium on farming sugar cane for bioethanol production in the Amazon.

1. Is the Commission aware of this motion?

2. How will it respond should the motion be passed by the Brazilian Senate?
