Question for written answer E-005462-18
to the Commission
Rule 130
Péter Niedermüller (S&D)

Subject:  Use of EU funds in Hungary
 Answer in writing

The Hungarian Prime Minister gave an address in Budapest on 23 October 2018, to which sympathisers of the governing party had been transported by vans purchased using European Union funds and owned by municipalities. The following is an excerpt from his address:

‘Today Brussels is dominated by those who want a European empire to replace the association of free nations. A European empire, which is not governed by the elected leaders of nations, but by bureaucrats in Brussels. We are at the point today where those who believe in a European empire already govern a number of European countries. Therefore, we can see what the “brave new world” would look like if it was left up to them. An increasing number of military-aged men are coming from other continents and other cultures and they will shape Europe’s large cities in their own image, and this will happen even in our lifetime, slowly but definitely rendering native Europeans a minority. Terror is becoming a part of life in big cities. Political manipulation referring to the rule of law is becoming common. The freedom of expression and the freedom of the press only extend up to the point where they echo them’.

In the Commission’s opinion, is it compatible with the principles for using EU funds if they are spent on supporting a political event that decries the European Union and its fundamental values?

Does the Committee monitoring the proper use of EU funds wish to investigate, in more detail, whether the use of EU funds in Hungary complies with the goals of the EU funds disbursed?
