Answer given by Mr Hogan on behalf of the European Commission
Question reference: E-005845/2018

Regulation (EU) 2018/848 on organic production and labelling of organic products(1) also applies to certain other products closely linked to agriculture, such as ‘sea salt and other salts for food and feed’, listed in Annex I to that regulation.

Pursuant to Articles 21(1) and 30(7)(a) of that regulation, the Commission intends to adopt a delegated act laying down detailed production and labelling rules on ‘sea salt and other salts for food and feed’.

The Commission has already started technical discussions on production and labelling rules on ‘sea salt and other salts for food and feed’ with Member States’ Experts. Two meetings of the Expert Group on Organic Production took place respectively on 17 October 2018 and on 29 November 2018.

The documents and minutes related to these two Expert Groups are available to the European Parliament and the Council on the Interinstitutional Register of Delegated Acts as well as to the general public on the Commission’s Communication and Information Resource Centre Administrator (CIRCA).

The Commission intends to present to the next Expert Group on Organic Production, which will take place at the beginning of 2019(2), the first draft of the delegated act laying down production rules and the conditions under which ‘sea salt and other salts for food and feed’ can be labelled as organic.
