Subject:  Force-feeding in foie gras production
 Answer in writing

Force-feeding, which is illegal in 23 Member States, is opposed by a large majority of EU citizens, who expect their institutions to represent them.

During this parliamentary term, around 50 questions have been tabled regarding force-feeding in foie gras production. Many of them explicitly asked for action by the Commission to delete the requirement of minimum liver weights in Regulation 543/2008 in order to permit foie gras production without force-feeding. This simple and costless measure would allow consumers to drive long-awaited change.

So far limited progress has been achieved.

Answers from the Commission have been sometimes inconsistent.

The evaluation awaited since 2016 is not yet available.

The meeting with MEPs announced in January by the Commissioners has not yet taken place.

Will the Commission engage to take firm action on a topic so many EU citizens feel strongly about?

Will the Commission commit to a meeting with MEPs in the short term?
