According to a recent announcement by the Hellenic Association of Importers and Exporters of Vegetable Material (ESEEFI), the possible advent of the bacterium ‘Xylella fastidiosa’ in Greece can even cause the disappearance of entire provinces from the olive-growing map.
ESEEFI warns about the incalculable damaging consequences for Greek agriculture and especially the olive sector, if this particular bacterium crosses the borders of Greece, and calls for measures to be taken in the points of entry into Greek territory, especially in ports, to prevent such a risk. In particular, concerning the necessary measures to be taken, ESEEFI considers it necessary to recruit a sufficient number of phytosanitary inspectors with flexible working hours and support, who will be able to carry out the required inspections effectively.
In addition, according to the Association, it is necessary to take measures to certify and educate the nursery agronomists and to establish a Greek Quality Sign.
In view of this, can the Commission say:
- 1.What information does it have about the spread of this bacterium in Europe?
- 2.Can it, if requested, help the national authorities to prevent this bacterium from emerging and entering the Greek territory and, if so, how?
