Liability for artificial intelligence and robotics: revision of the current legislative framework

Question for written answer E-000028-19
to the Commission
Rule 130
Miroslav Mikolášik (PPE)

When it comes to the rapidly growing artificial intelligence and robotics sector, liability is considered one of the key aspects of public trust. An appropriate legal framework must therefore be guaranteed.

Following the publications of its communication on Artificial Intelligence for Europe on 25 April 2018 and the Coordinated Plan on Artificial Intelligence on 7 December 2018, what approach has the Commission endorsed vis-à-vis liability in the re-evaluation of the Machinery (2006/42/EC) and Product Liability (85/374/EC) Directives?
