E-000154-19
Question for written answer E-000154-19
to the Commission (Vice-President/High Representative)
Rule 130
Nadja Hirsch (ALDE)

Subject:  VP/HR — Downgrade of the EU Delegation in Washington
 Answer in writing

At the end of 2018, the US Government downgraded the diplomatic status of the ‘Delegation of the European Union to the United States’. The US clearly omitted to announce this. The downgrade means that the US Government now no longer considers the EU to be the equivalent of a nation state, instead lowering its status to that of an international organisation.

I would therefore like to ask the Commission the following:
1. When was the High Representative made aware of this downgrade?
2. What will be the consequences of the downgrade?
3. What steps are being taken to reinstate the EU’s original status?
