Question for written answer E-000207-19
to the Commission
Rule 130
Udo Voigt (NI)

Subject:  Contact between high-ranking EU representatives and George Soros (I)
 Answer in writing

In its 12 January edition, the Hungarian daily Magyar Idők reported extensively on continuing, intensive contact between major speculator and ‘philanthropist’ George Soros, or representatives of his organisations, and leading EU politicians.

It stated that 12 lobbyists from the Soros ‘Open Society European Policy Institute’ (OSEPI) who are accredited to the European Parliament had met with Members of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs 52 times. In addition, George Soros has met members of the Commission in an official capacity more than 20 times since Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker took office in 2014.

Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans also met Soros and representatives of his network in September 2015 in New York, and a meeting with Commission President Juncker took place in Brussels in April 2017. Another of Soros’s interlocutors and an important figure politically was the Commissioner responsible for migration, Dimitris Avramopoulos, who is said to have held negotiations with Soros lobbyists in June and November 2015.

1. Can the Commission confirm that the abovementioned meetings between George Soros, or representatives of his organisations, and high-ranking EU representatives took place? 2. What gave rise to the meetings and what was their content? (Please answer in detail for each meeting.) 3. How does the Commission justify these numerous, politically highly charged meetings, which high-ranking EU representatives have been conducting, over many years, with George Soros and employees of his network?
