Question for written answer E-000253-19
to the Commission
Rule 130
Philippe Juvin (PPE)

Subject:  The digital transformation of healthcare
 Answer in writing

The application of information technology to the field of medicine, also known as e-health, is one of the Commission's flagship initiatives in the development of the Digital Single Market. As the Commission pointed out in its communication of 25 April 2018 on the digital transformation of health and care, it is important to offer innovative solutions that will make healthcare services more effective and accessible.

In this respect, will the Commission specify the mechanisms it intends to put in place, and state in particular:
1. What tools does it intend to introduce for the benefit of all health professionals to assist them in the implementation of the new digital practices?
2. With regard to citizens’ digital skills, could the Commission clarify the framework for action to ensure equal digital access to e-health?
3. What measures are envisaged to ensure greater protection and confidentiality as regards citizens’ medical data, in particular in the framework of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)?
