Answer given by Vice-President Mogherini on behalf of the European Commission
Question reference: E-000324/2019

In October 2015, the High Representative/Vice-President appointed Ambassador Mara Marinaki as the first European External Action Service Principal Advisor on Gender and on Women, Peace and Security (WPS).

She is mandated to contribute to the EU's internal/external coherence of policies in the coordination on gender and WPS related matters, their enhanced visibility and prioritisation in EU's external action.

Special focus is given to the policies on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment in all EU external action as well as on the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on WPS and its follow-up resolutions, through the EU Strategic Approach to WPS annexed to the Council Conclusions on WPS adopted on 10 December 2018(1) by the Council.

This establishes the framework for EU holistic action to strengthen and implement the WPS agenda.

These specific goals and priorities were already defined in the ‘informal Roadmap & Work Plan 2017 on Gender/Gender Equality, Women's Empowerment and the implementation of UNSC Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security’, endorsed by the Council in January 2017 (WK 665/2017 INIT).
