E-000782-19
Question for written answer E-000782-19
to the Commission
Rule 130
Francesc Gambús (PPE)

Subject:  Energy interconnections in the south of the EU
 Answer in writing

Spain’s Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia and France’s Commission de Régulation de l’Énergie have issued an unfavourable opinion on the STEP project, the first phase of the Midcat gas pipeline. This project was due to double interconnection capacity between these countries, thus improving interconnections at European level and contributing towards the energy union. It is therefore a priority project under the Commission’s criteria.

1. What view does the Commission take of the French and Spanish regulators’ rejection of STEP?

2. Has the Commission received any information from the regulators on this decision?

3. What does the Commission intend to do to improve energy interconnections between Spain and the rest of the Union?
