Subject:  Measures to contain the influenza virus in the EU Member States
 Answer in writing

The influenza virus, which is claiming hundreds of lives, is spreading alarmingly in a number of EU Member States, some of which have declared an epidemic, with serious implications in terms of public health.

Is the Commission envisaging the introduction of an effective programme of measures throughout the European Union to halt the spread of this epidemic and prevent resulting loss of life, bearing in mind the principle of free movement on the internal market?
