E-001093/2019(ASW)
Answer given by Mr Vella on behalf of the European Commission
Question reference: E-001093/2019

The Commission is aware of the incidents that have been reported in the fishing grounds of the Southwest Atlantic.

Without prejudice to the responsibilities of the flag and coastal States concerned under international law, the Commission has the intention to address the allegations of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities with the competent flag State authorities, including those of the People's Republic of China.

The Commission wishes to take this opportunity to recall that it established, in 2015, a working group dedicated to IUU fishing-related matters with this country. This working group allows for exchanges on any suspected or confirmed IUU fishing activities. Cooperation on such issues is also an integral part of the EU-China Blue Partnership for the Oceans signed on 16 July 2018.
