Environmental Noise Directive — reduction of noise at source

Question for written answer E-001191-19
to the Commission
Rule 130
Tiemo Wölken (S&D)

The Commission Staff Working Document ‘Executive Summary of the REFIT Evaluation of Directive 2002/49/EC relating to the assessment and management of environmental noise’, dating from 2016, contains the following statement: ‘However, END noise population exposure data has not yet been used by the EU for the design of legislation on noise at source.’

1. What ‘legislation’ on the reduction of ‘noise at source’ might this refer to, and why does it ‘not yet’ exist?

2. When will the limits on noise emissions from tyres be reduced as originally planned and recognised as technically feasible — if necessary in stages — or alternatively, why is this not being done?

3. When will motor vehicle manufacturers be obliged to limit noise emissions into the environment — if necessary in stages — in a similar manner to noise emissions into vehicle interiors, or alternatively, why is this not being done?
