to the Commission
Rule 130
Maria Heubuch (Verts/ALE) , Ignazio Corrao (EFDD)

 Subject:  Cooperation of the Commission with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
 Answer in writing

On 27 February 2019, the European Parliament Committee on Development held an exchange of views on ‘Private philanthropy for development: facts, issues and the EU’s approach’.

The Commission, represented by its Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development (DG DEVCO), explained that the Commission cooperates with various foundations, including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF).

Could the Commission please indicate the priority areas of its cooperation with the BMGF?

Could it please provide a list of its joint activities with the BMGF where the BMGF has made a financial contribution to the Commission, or where the BMGF and the Commission have made a joint contribution to a third party? This list should include information about the following:
The Directorate General involved in each activity;
The nature of the activity, its objectives and the expected results;
The organisation implementing the activity and the intended beneficiary(ies);
The total cost of each activity and the percentage covered by the BMGF;
The duration of each activity and its starting date;
The state(s) and/or region concerned.
