 Subject:  Climate change, food safety and sustainability

The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has predicted that climate change will have a serious impact on agriculture, fisheries and livestock farming, and therefore a significant impact on food safety and sustainability. Data have already been published on lower cereal production in southern Europe, forestry production in central and eastern Europe and the effect on fish stocks, principally in the North Atlantic, owing to changes in temperature. Other studies show that livestock production systems are changing across Europe, also owing to climate change. In several regions, producers will have to adapt their farming methods because of new diseases affecting livestock or the harmful effects on pastures. Finally, with regard to agricultural crops, agroforestry production or livestock farming, the sustainability of water resources and water management, which are in turn affected by rapid climate change such as rising temperatures or drought, are crucial.

In view of the above, will the Commission say:
1. Does it have evidence of the impact of climate change on fisheries, farming and animal production in the EU?
2. What is the situation in Greece?
3. What is the effect on food safety in the EU?
