Question for written answer E-001652-19
to the Commission
Rule 130
Ana Miranda (Verts/ALE)

Subject:  Expansion of Puerto de Las Nieves harbour, Gran Canaria
 Answer in writing

The municipality of Agaete is located in one of the Canary Islands’ most iconic settings. A substantial part of it is protected as a special conservation area and as a special bird protection area in the Tamadaba Natural Park, itself part of the Canary Islands Network of Protected Natural Areas and the Natura 2000 network.

However, despite opposition from both residents and the municipality itself, the Canary Islands government plans to expand Puerto de Las Nieves harbour located in this municipality, without providing any economic, social or environmental justification or practising any transparency.

1. Is the Commission aware of this situation?

2. Can it take any action to ensure the voices of the citizens of Agaete are heard in this matter?

3. Can it urge the Canary Islands government to take into account the views of these citizens, whose lives would be most affected by this project?
