Answer given by Mr Oettinger on behalf of the European Commission
Question reference: E-001657/2019

The Commission performs a security assessment on non-EU nationals who are considered for a traineeship in the institution. The security assessment’s objective is to evaluate the potential risk vis-à-vis the Commission’s sensitive and classified information, as well as towards its staff and premises.

For this reason, an evaluation is conducted which takes into account the trainee’s profile and the level of sensitivity of the information this person will be called upon to access, while working for the service concerned. The security assessment can require specific measures to be taken, or altogether refuse the candidate.

The Commission is not in a position to pronounce itself on the case mentioned, in the absence of specific information necessary for the security assessment.
