Question for written answer E-001792-19
to the Commission
Rule 130
Remo Sernagiotto (ECR)

 Subject:  ‘La Piave’ cycle path
 Answer in writing

In 2013, the idea of building a cycle and pedestrian path on the flood plain of the River Piave was put forward, in order to promote the environment, nature and landscape of an important part of the Treviso area.

Following the assessment of environmental implications carried out in compliance with the EU Directives on sites of Community importance (SCIs) and special protection areas (Natura 2000 network), the ‘La Piave’ cycle path was included in the Veneto Region’s call for tender published in the BUR of 2 October 2014, securing financing of EUR 1 320 000, from CIPE (Italian Interministerial Committee for Economic Planning) and EU funds.

In spite of that, the letter of invitation and the specifications for the assignment to draw up the final/executive project make no reference to its natural, environmental and landscape-related features, but instead refer to the building of cycling facilities in the traditional, urban and tarred sense.

Such distortions do not seem to have been remedied at all during the management and implementation stages of the work, which has, however, been halted by red tape and conflicting political interests.

Can the Commission therefore say, as a matter of urgency:

What it intends to do to find out what has happened to the fund earmarked for the implementation of the work by the Veneto Region, which comes from both national resources (the CIPE) and those of the EU?
