 Subject:  Recognition of Italian sign language
 Answer in writing 

Having regard to: Articles 2, 5, 9, 10, 19, 168 and Article 216(2) TFEU and Articles 2 and 21 TEU; the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union; the resolutions of 17 June 1988 on sign languages for deaf people and of 18 November 1998 on sign languages; the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), which entered into force in the EU on 21 January 2011 in accordance with Council Decision 2010/48/EC concerning the conclusion, by the European Community, of the CRPD; the resolution of 7 July 2016 on the implementation of the CRPD, with special regard to the Concluding Observations of the UN CRPD Committee; having regard to the proposal for a directive of the European Parliament and of the Council of 2 December 2015 on the approximation of the laws, regulations and administrative provisions of the Member States as regards the accessibility requirements for products and services (COM(2015)0615) and the recommendation on the Protection of Sign languages in the member states of the Council of Europe (Doc. 9738, 17 March 2003);

Can the Commission say:
1. What its view is of Italy’s failure to recognise Italian sign language;
2. Whether it intends to take any measures to harmonise the European framework for the recognition of sign languages and if so, what measures will it take?
