Question for written answer E-001891-19
to the Commission
Rule 130
Mara Bizzotto (ENF)

 Subject:  Support for the shellfish farming sector in the Province of Rovigo and the Po Delta
 Answer in writing

2018 was a very difficult year for the shellfish farming sector in the Province of Rovigo and the Po Delta. A number of adverse weather events, such as the exceptional period of bad weather last October-November, have caused enormous damage to the shellfish farms. The shellfish farmers’ consortium of the Veneto Region and Coldiretti Impresapesca (the national fisheries trade association) have reported devastating deaths of shellfish and the loss of juvenile fish on the licensed farms, in addition to a reduction of available space for the farms. The producers, who have been brought to their knees by this extremely serious situation, are concerned about the survival of shellfish farming and are therefore calling for the support of the European institutions to revive this key sector of the local economy and to continue protecting the environment and biodiversity of the Po Delta, which has been recognised as a Unesco Biosphere Reserve. The very difficult circumstances of the shellfish farmers and their families will have a serious impact on the socioeconomic fabric of the surrounding area.

Can the Commission therefore say:
1. What measures it intends to take to support the shellfish farmers who have suffered serious damage to their products;
2. Whether it will open up talks in Brussels between farmers, scientists and the EU institutions with a view to drawing up a programme to safeguard the lagoons of the Po Delta, as well as the economy and jobs that depend on them?
