Subject:  EU support for the development of mentoring at European level
 Answer in writing

While there are now around 700 mentors in 14 EU countries, mentoring remains underdeveloped in Europe.

There is, however, much to suggest that it could be addressed very effectively at a European level, not least in developing the European Pillar of Social Rights, as it helps to create a stronger society, promote knowledge-sharing around social inclusion objectives and encourage participation in the local community.

It has been shown to be effective in preventing early school-leaving, tackling inequalities in career prospects, enhancing the integration of migrants and new arrivals and boosting social mobility, at optimum cost-efficiency.

From an EU perspective, mentoring offers an innovation tool for use in a variety of European policies and embodies a core value underpinning the European Union — that of living together in diversity.

Will the Commission include mentoring in the next multiannual financial framework, specifically by supporting the development of a common scientific basis for innovation tools?

Would the Commission consider further developing the mentoring facet of the Erasmus+ Programme, centring this around informal and non-formal learning?
