Question for written answer E-001920-19
to the Commission
Rule 130
Dario Tamburrano (EFDD) , Eleonora Evi (EFDD)

 Subject:  Fake news regarding wolves in Italy
 Answer in writing

Following a circular issued by the Ministry of the Interior, exemptions from the protection enjoyed by wolves may be sought for the protection of ‘public safety’, farming and sheep-breeding.

There is a widespread belief propagated by politicians in areas where wolves are causing the greatest concern(1) that local authorities and the European Union(2) have been encouraging the widespread reintroduction of wolves in Italy.

There have been no reports of wolf attacks on humans in Italy since the nineteenth century;
DNA analyses and painstaking investigation often reveal that it is feral dogs and not wolves(3) that are responsible for the harm done by attacks on livestock and the resulting public alarm;
Wolves have been independently re-establishing themselves in certain areas.

In view of this:
1. Can the Commission confirm (or deny) the above three points?
2. Will it extend efforts to combat fake news to the fear of wolves prompted by attacks on livestock that were actually carried out by feral dogs?
3. Will it also extend efforts to combat fake news to a rebuttal of allegations by Italian politicians that the authorities have been encouraging the ‘reintroduction of wolves’?
