Question for written answer E-002086-19
to the Commission (Vice-President/High Representative)
Rule 130
Javier Couso Permuy (GUE/NGL)

Subject:  VP/HR — Investigation into the Hammarskjöld case
 Answer in writing

In early January, The Observer published an article on the investigation into the death in 1961 of Dag Hammarskjöld, Secretary-General of the United Nations, killed in a plane crash in Ndola, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). According to an investigation by Mads Brügger and Göran Björkdahl, the plane carrying Hammarskjöld was shot down by a Belgian pilot called Jan van Risseghem.

1. Does the VP/HR know what the state of play is as regards the inquiries into the death of Hammarskjöld?

2. Does the VP/HR intend to call on Belgium to cooperate with the investigation given the alleged involvement of one of its citizens in the case?
