Question for written answer E-002089-19
to the Commission (Vice-President/High Representative)
Rule 130
Javier Couso Permuy (GUE/NGL)

Subject:  VP/HR — Hussein Bachir Brahim

In mid-January 2019, the Spanish authorities extradited Hussein Bachir Brahim, an activist advocating the self-determination of Western Sahara. He arrived in the Canary Islands on 11 January and requested political asylum but, despite that, he was taken to an immigrant detention centre and subsequently extradited. According to Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic sources, he is currently in Luidadya prison in Marrakech and could face a sentence of between 10 and 15 years behind bars.

1. Is the VP/HR aware of Hussein Bachir Brahim’s case?

2. Will she call on Morocco to free him?
