Parliamentary questions
PDF 23kWORD 21k
11 June 2019
Answer given by Vice-President Mogherini on behalf of the European Commission
Question reference: E-002091/2019

The European Union supports the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of Syria. The EU has consistently requested all parties in the conflict, starting with the Syrian regime, as well as foreign actors to refrain from the use of force in Syria, protect the civilian population and infrastructure and work to respect the de-escalation agreements as well as United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution 2401(1) calling for a nationwide ceasefire.

As the EU has stated many times, Israel has the right to defend itself. At the same time, the EU has called on all regional actors to show restraint and support the peace process for Syria, while avoiding any military escalation that would undermine the Geneva peace talks or affect regional stability.

The EU's view is that only a political process in line with UNSC resolution 2254(2) and the Geneva Communique(3) can bring sustainable peace to Syria.
