E-002252-19
Question for written answer E-002252-19
to the Commission
Rule 138
João Ferreira (GUE/NGL)

Subject:  VAT exemptions for scientific institutions
 Answer in writing

In Portugal, a number of scientists and heads of R & D units have been drawing attention to the existing inequality at EU level regarding VAT exemptions for scientific institutions. They consider that scientific institutions in Portugal have been at a disadvantage compared to those in its European partners, since they pay 23% VAT for each purchase or service, while in other countries exemption or reimbursement mechanisms exist that they would like to see implemented in Portugal.

Will the Commission say whether it is aware of the differences obtaining in the EU at this level and give its assessment of this situation?
