E-002294-19
Question for written answer E-002294-19
to the Commission
Rule 130
Jörg Meuthen (ID)

 Subject:  Carbon border tax
 Answer in writing

Ms von der Leyen has proposed a carbon border tax on goods imported that would be based on the volume of CO2 emitted during the manufacturing process.

1. Has the Commission already carried out a legal appraisal as to whether such a tax, which would be an import barrier, would be compatible with the EU’s existing free-trade agreements?

2. Has the Commission already checked whether such a tax would be compatible with World Trade Organisation rules?
