Subject:  An ambitious strategy for the EU's industrial future

In its conclusions of 21 and 22 March 2019, the Council called on the Commission to present, by the end of 2019, a comprehensive long-term industrial policy strategy with clearly defined measures for implementation.

In recent years, European industry, from SMEs to large corporate groups, has been neglected and is now in decline. It accounts for only 15.4% of European employment, despite being essential for both the future and the autonomy of the EU.

Europe needs industry, and industry needs Europe. Supporting our industry must be at the heart of our political agenda. The forthcoming strategy must be ambitious, make incisive moves to promote international trade and competition, better support innovation and be adapted to the climate, energy and digital transitions. The EU must encourage the development of European industrial leaders from all EU countries.

Does the Commission envisage establishing performance indicators for European industry to monitor the implementation of the strategic guidelines and to facilitate comparison between European industry and its counterparts elsewhere in the world?

Will the Commission continue its efforts to establish a permanent and structured dialogue between institutions and industry in order to effectively implement the industrial strategy?
