Question for written answer E-002500-19
to the Commission
Rule 138
Matt Carthy (GUE/NGL)

Subject:  Conditionality attached to beef fund

The Commission has recently announced a fund of EUR 50 million in aid for Irish beef farmers, in light of the difficulties they face related to Brexit. It has attached conditionality to this fund insofar as Ireland is required either to reduce production or to restructure the sector.

Has the Commission considered that incentivising farmers who are the fifth most carbon‐ efficient in Europe to reduce production will create a gap encouraging less carbon-efficient producers to increase production, thus moving the EU further away from its climate goals?
