Question for written answer E-002935-19
to the Commission
Rule 138
Dolors Montserrat (PPE)

Subject:  Unity in the face of radicalism and violence

Yesterday in Barcelona, the Guardia Civil detained a group of radical separatists accused of planning attacks using explosives.

The group was allegedly planning a campaign of violence in the run-up to the second anniversary of the illegal referendum on 1 October and in advance of the verdict in the trial of the Catalonia independence leaders.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office at Spain’s High Court has classified the separatists in custody — members of the Committees for the Defence of the Republic (CDRs) — as a terrorist group, pointing out that their plans were ‘in the advanced stages of preparation’ and that the group had ‘specific targets’.

The suspects have been provisionally charged with terrorism offences, rebellion and possession of explosives.

The EU should condemn and take action against radicals who are using political ideas as an excuse to destabilise and break up Spain and the EU.

1. Is the Commission intending to make a statement in support of Spain’s law enforcement authorities and publicly defend the rule of law in Spain?

2. Does the Commission think it is normal that the President of the Government of Catalonia publicly supports the CDRs, and maintains that this is all a political set-up?

3. What action is the Commission going to take to combat the separatist radicalism that is threatening and attacking the values of the European Union?
