VP/HR — Resumption of dialogue between the Venezuelan Government and opposition

Question for written answer E-002951-19
to the Commission (Vice-President/High Representative)
Rule 138
Leopoldo López Gil (PPE)

On 11 September 2019, the VP/HR urged the Venezuelan Government and opposition to return to the negotiating table in talks mediated by Norway with a view to resolving the prolonged crisis in which Venezuela has been mired.

Nicolás Maduro’s government, which had broken off talks with the opposition in August in response to new US sanctions against his regime, is now willing to resume negotiations.

1. Is the European Union considering measures to re-establish this dialogue?

2. If not, is the European Union willing to implement the threatened sanctions for failure to do so?
