Question for written answer E-002983-19
to the Commission
Rule 138
Costas Mavrides (S&D)

Subject:  Destruction of mosaics in the church of Agios Evlalios
 Answer in writing

The courtyard of the church of Agios Evlalios in the province of Kyrenia on the territory of the Republic of Cyprus, which is under Turkish military control, contains mosaics of significant archaeological and religious value half-covered with soil and stones. These mosaics are completely unprotected and vulnerable, so that people and animals as well as cars, including military vehicles of the Turkish occupying army, pass over them, causing irreparable damage and destroying the mosaics.

In view of the above, will the Commission say:
1. Is it aware of this issue and the unacceptable conditions to which these mosaics are exposed?
2. What specific measures will it take to ensure that immediate measures are taken to protect the mosaics?
