Question for written answer E-003056-19
to the Commission
Rule 138
Mara Bizzotto (ID)

Subject:  Job cuts at the company Marelli Motori in Vicenza province — mobilisation of the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF)
 Answer in writing

The company Marelli Motori has long formed part of the history of the town of Arzignano in Vicenza province. Founded in 1891, it manufactures industrial generators and electric motors for the electricity generation, manufacturing, marine and oil sectors. In 2013 it was bought out by the Carlyle Group, a US global investment firm, which then cut the workforce by 100 in 2018. In May 2019 Marelli Motori was taken over the British multinational Langley Holdings; three months later, Langley announced redundancies at the Marelli Motori plant in Vincenza province affecting 40 workers.

These workers will shortly find themselves out of work with little prospect of finding new jobs, and will thus suffer serious financial difficulties as a result of long-term unemployment. This state of affairs will also have serious repercussions for the social fabric of Arzignano and Vicenza province.

1. What protection will the Commission afford the 40 workers from the Marelli Motori plant in Arzignano and how will it prevent further redundancies?

2. Does it believe the conditions are right for mobilisation of the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund, or other EU funds, to support these workers and their families?
