Question for written answer E-003141-19
to the Commission
Rule 138
Ruža Tomašić (ECR)

Subject:  Exclusion of fisheries from Commission portfolio title

I am concerned that the title for the Commission’s ‘Environment and Oceans’ portfolio does not include ‘Fisheries’. This indicates that the Commission’s focus will be directed towards other matters; however, I believe that fisheries should be treated on an equal footing. In this connection, could you please explain the rationale behind omitting fisheries from the portfolio title and state when the name will be changed?

EP committees are well delineated and have clear designations, such as the Committee on Fisheries and the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety.

I have heard a number of justifications, one of them being that the fisheries sector falls under ‘oceans’. In this connection, how will we categorise inland aquaculture, which is an integral part of the common fisheries policy and has become one of the fastest-growing industries in food production?
