Situation of refugees and migrants in the EU

Question for written answer E-003260-19
to the Commission
Rule 138
João Ferreira (GUE/NGL)

Refugees and migrants continue to die in the Mediterranean while the European Union stands idly by.

Solidarity is increasingly being punished in the EU: there have been numerous cases of volunteers and other citizens being intimidated, prosecuted or punished for showing compassion to migrants.

Several EU countries are systematically imprisoning migrants, often repeatedly or for prolonged periods. This has given rise to frequent and systemic violations of the right to liberty and has ruined the lives of victims, exacerbating their vulnerability and the incidence of mental health problems, such as anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.

1. When does the Commission plan to submit its proposal on humanitarian visas?2. Is the Commission willing to propose or, make more widely available, legal avenues, or additional legal guarantees, for people seeking protection over and above beyond resettlement (e.g. family reunification)?3. What measures does the Commission intend to take to ensure that people conducting search and rescue missions are not treated like criminals, to create effective and humane alternatives to the detention of migrants and to put an end to the imprisonment of unaccompanied children?
