Question for written answer E-003360-19
to the Commission
Rule 138
Alexis Georgoulis (GUE/NGL)

Subject:  Commission initiatives with regard to the framework for Action on Cultural Heritage
 Answer in writing

The European Framework for Action on Cultural Heritage is a major Commission initiative which builds on last year’s European Year of Cultural Heritage.

In particular, it aims to highlight cultural heritage as a shared resource, raise awareness of our common history and values, and strengthen a sense of belonging to a common European cultural and political area. Two conferences were launched on the future of heritage. The first was held last April in Dublin and focused on social innovation and its relationship with cultural heritage.

One of the three areas discussed looked at the revitalisation of rural communities. In light of the achievements in 2018 and this year, can the Commission say:
1. How does it plan to make use of the funds available for 2020, and what percentage will be allocated to each of the areas of the European Framework for Action?
2. In a number of Member States, such as Greece, most of the territory is made up of rural areas. Will any weight be given to these Member States and, if so, how?
3. A number of rural regions are affected by long-term unemployment and low social cohesion. How will the Commission focus on revitalising these areas in relation to rich rural regions in central Europe?
