When will Europe's highway codes be standardised?
23.10.2019
Question for written answer E-003421/2019/rev.1
to the Commission
Rule 138
István Ujhelyi (S&D)
The EU is often criticised for having a legal system which is unjustifiably divergent, not uniform and which in some cases over-regulates. I have been contacted many times by citizens complaining about the disturbing number of discrepancies between the Member States’ highway codes and calling for the latter to be fine-tuned.
It is true that there is currently no uniform speed regulation system and that speed limits vary, yet there are also significant differences in the shape and content of traffic signs, just as there are substantial differences in the tolerance and sanctioning of alcohol consumption and the equipment which must be carried in cars.
- 1. When will the Commission initiate the standardisation of traffic rules in Europe?
- 2. Have any attempts to do this ever been made by the EU institutions? If so, what was the outcome?
