Question for written answer
to the Commission
Rule 138
Maria Spyraki
 Answer in writing
 Subject: Violence against women

In early November, a male student in Thessaloniki sexually abused a female student who was studying in the reading room of Aristotle University Library, a crime for which he was then convicted (1) .

The phenomenon of violence against women is widespread throughout Europe. This is a violation of fundamental rights with very serious consequences for the physical and psychological health of the victims and society in general.

In view of this, and on the occasion of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (25 November), will the Commission say:

What action has been taken in the framework of the European ‘Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme’ for 2014-2020 to combat violence against women within the EU Member States?

To what extent have the EU funds provided for in Article 7 of Regulation 1383/2013 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 17 December 2013 been taken up to serve the objectives of preventing and combating all forms of violence against women under Article 4 (1) (e) of that Regulation?
