Question for written answer
to the Commission
Rule 138
Ioannis Lagos
 Answer in writing
Subject: Τragic toll claimed by the ‘Geryon’ weather front in the village of Kineta, the north-eastern Aegean, the Dodecanese islands and Halkidiki

Over the last few days, a severe weather front christened ‘Geryon’ has ravaged the north-eastern Aegean and Dodecanese islands and Halkidiki. Heavy rains and gale-force winds have claimed four lives and caused incalculable damage, with firefighters being called on countless occasions to pump out water, cut away fallen trees and free trapped victims.

A bridge collapsed in Rhodes, where homes and streets were engulfed and major roads submerged under as much as one metre of water. In Halkidiki, heavy rains caused watercourses to swell, bringing down trees, causing major damage to homes and flooding roads. In Limnos, villages found themselves surrounded by lakes of water and the storm exacted a massive toll in Kineta and along Katerini beach, causing widespread destruction of homes, businesses, roads and infrastructures, much of it as a result of landslides and subsidence.

In view of this:

Will the Commission immediately release EU solidarity funding to repair in full the havoc wreaked by the ‘Geryon’ storm?
