International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists: freedom of expression on social media

On the occasion of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, Parliament reaffirmed the importance of journalism and freedom of the press. Although Article 11 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union provides for freedom of expression and information, there are still countries where journalists suffer violence and intimidation for exercising that right.

In the light of the above, can the Commission say:

• 1.how it intends to defend freedom of expression in order to preserve the essence of democracy in Europe?
• 2.what concrete steps it will take to stop the use of violence and intimidation against journalists and to safeguard freedom of expression on social media?
