Syrian students abducted by Turkish armed forces and ISIS

Question for written answer E-000819/2020
to the Commission
Rule 138
Giorgos Georgiou (GUE/NGL)

It has been reported that the Turkish armed forces, together with ISIS, have abducted 700 Syrian students, mainly from the Universities of Idlib and Sham.

A United Nations human rights monitoring team in Syria is currently drawing up a report on abductions by Turkish-backed terrorist organisations.

It would appear that the victims are being taken to prison camps, where they are either executed or drugged and brainwashed into entering combat or carrying out suicide missions.

Also, contrary to Turkey’s promises that, with the security zone in place, 350 000 refugees would be able to be return, the UN is indicating that 400 000 Syrians have been driven over he border by Turkish forces and that 390 000 women and children have been forced from their homes since 1 December 2019, when Turkey stepped up its military operations.

What action will the Commission take to locate the 700 students and assist the 790.000 Syrians who have been uprooted by the Turkish armed forces?

What action will the EU take to end the criminal activities of Turkey and its collaboration with ISIS in ethnic cleansing operations in Syria?

What steps will it take to address the consequences of Turkey’s actions on the refugee situation in Syria?
