Question for oral answer O-000055/2016
to the Commission
Rule 128
Czesław Adam Siekierski, on behalf of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development

Subject: Measures to alleviate the crisis in the European agriculture sector
 Answer in plenary

European agriculture has seen no real sign of improvements, despite the 2015 exceptional measures.

Falling prices, costly inputs and the Russian trade ban are damaging the sustainability of individual producers and threatening the medium- and long-term viability of EU agricultural production.

The action taken to date is welcome, but all measures must ensure that aid reaches primary producers and improves their market position.

1. Can the Commission elaborate on the next steps to be taken to alleviate pressure on farmers in the worst-hit sectors?

2. How has the Commission evaluated the effectiveness of the 2015 aid package?

3. How will the Commission combat unfair practices in the food supply chain and ensure fair returns to farmers?

4. What precautions can be taken against effects on our agriculture of future shocks and disturbances from beyond the EU’s borders?

5. How will the Commission ensure that flexible and innovative financial instruments are available in a practical form to producers, following discussions with the financial institutions?
