Subject: Major interpellation - The tragic situation of the Land of Fires and its inhabitants
 Answer in plenary

The Land of Fires is a huge area in Campania containing more than 2 000 highly polluted sites that affect the lives of 2.5 million inhabitants, who die as a result of cancers from exposure to spontaneous highly toxic fires produced by the illegal disposal of hazardous waste managed by the Camorra.

The area affected by toxic fires includes 57 municipalities between Naples and Caserta. Nobody knows how much toxic waste has been buried there over the years and where.

The result of this pollution is an excess of mortality and significant increases in the incidence of various cancers (see public reports of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità(1)).

In 32 municipalities in the province of Naples, mortality exceeds the regional average by 10% (men) and 13% (women), and in 23 municipalities in the province of Caserta by, respectively, 4% and 6%. The Naples Province Cancer Registry records an excess incidence of tumours of the central nervous system in the first year of life (+128%) and in the group between zero and 14 years (+42%).

Is the Commission aware of the tragic situation in the Land of Fires?

What are the policy options to start remediation and stop the disposal of hazardous waste?
