Question for oral answer O-000128/2018
to the Commission
Rule 128
Czesław Adam Siekierski, on behalf of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development

 Subject: Protection of EU rice
 Answer in plenary

The massive inflow of so-called ‘indica rice’ from Cambodia and Myanmar, which benefits from a tariff exemption scheme, has exerted a strong downward pressure on rice prices in the EU. A large amount of this rice is imported during the harvest season, ready to be sold in supermarkets and undercutting EU producers.

In view of these difficulties, EU producers have requested that a safeguard investigation be initiated under Article 22 et seq. of the GSP Regulation.

Could the Commission present the full state of play of this safeguard investigation and indicate in particular:

– the conclusions that it has reached;

– the measures it is proposing to put in place (if any);

– the next steps towards the formal adoption of such measures.
