to the Commission

Rule 128

Peter Liese, Jytte Guteland, Jadwiga Wiśniewska, Nils Torvalds, Bas Eickhout, Lynn Boylan, Eleonora Evi

on behalf of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety

Subject: Strategy for long-term greenhouse gas emissions reduction by the EU in accordance with the Paris Agreement

Parties to the Paris Agreement are invited to communicate, by 2020, their mid-century, long-term low GHG emission development strategies. The Regulation on the Governance of the Energy Union and Climate Action also provides that the Commission adopt a proposal for a Union long-term strategy for greenhouse gas emissions reduction in accordance with the Paris Agreement, which includes a scenario for achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions within the Union by 2050 and negative emissions thereafter. In its communication A Clean Planet for all, the Commission presented its strategic long-term vision for a climate-neutral economy by 2050, including eight possible pathways.

What are the actions planned by the Commission to ensure a proper follow-up to the communication, and in particular, for the Union to adopt its mid-century long-term strategy in accordance with the Paris Agreement?

What are the actions envisaged by the Commission to update the Unions Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) so that it can make its contribution to achieving the Paris Agreements temperature goals?
