Commission Directive 2010/48/EU

Question for written answer P-008233-14
to the Commission
Rule 130
Gerard Batten (EFDD)

The above directive includes leakage of hydraulic fluids from servo-assisted steering systems in its reasons for failing vehicles undergoing an MOT test, on the grounds that total loss of fluid results in loss of control of the vehicle.

Total loss of fluid would, I am informed, merely result in a reversion to the heavier steering at very low speeds, such as when parking, but is undetectable at road speeds.

1. Does the Commission disagree with any of the statements above?

2. If the Commission thinks that the directive is correct in asserting that complete loss of fluid results in loss of control of the vehicle, can it please cite the research supporting this, or give specific instances where dangerous incidents or accidents have occurred as a result?

3. If the Commission finds that the assertion in the directive is unfounded, can it advise on its plans and timescales for repealing this part of the directive?
